About the work

Erreka means "stream". A pale channel of cream and yellow-green winds down the tall canvas between dark masses of brown, grey and olive. Oil, resin and acrylic build a mottled, layered surface close to the look of wet stone, with small flecks of rust, blue and moss. Near the upper centre, fine swirling lines circle a dark opening.

In Crossing Water, water shapes whatever it passes through. Here the paint seems to follow its path.

About the series

“We set ourselves the challenge of working with the concept of water, which was very different from what I had been doing. It had no fixed structure, and this forced me to experiment with things I had previously kept more contained, particularly colour itself.”

Ima Montoya, artist statement, 2026
