About the work

Grey, mauve and muted green cover this tall canvas like a stretch of wet shore. Streaks and faint ridges run down its length, and small pale forms, some shaped like shells, are scattered across the surface. The top edge is lighter, almost white.

Part of Crossing Water, a collaborative project, the painting uses oil, resin, pigments and sand to hold the traces water leaves behind as it flows.

About the series

“We set ourselves the challenge of working with the concept of water, which was very different from what I had been doing. It had no fixed structure, and this forced me to experiment with things I had previously kept more contained, particularly colour itself.”

Ima Montoya, artist statement, 2026
