About the work

Lurrean translates from Basque as "on the earth". On a near-black ground, hundreds of small loops and rings in maroon and dusky pink gather in the upper half, mixed with tiny cream and peach dots. Lower down the marks thin into scattered clusters, with patches of pale blue-grey at the left. The mixed-media surface is pitted and uneven, like soil or stone seen close up.

Crossing Water looks at the traces water leaves behind, and this canvas reads like such a surface.

About the series

“We set ourselves the challenge of working with the concept of water, which was very different from what I had been doing. It had no fixed structure, and this forced me to experiment with things I had previously kept more contained, particularly colour itself.”

Ima Montoya, artist statement, 2026
