“We set ourselves the challenge of working with the concept of water, which was very different from what I had been doing. It had no fixed structure, and this forced me to experiment with things I had previously kept more contained, particularly colour itself.”
Ima Montoya, artist statement, 2026

Crossing Water began in 2024 as a collaborative project with other artists, around a single idea: water. Oil, resin, pigments and sand build surfaces that hold the traces water leaves on stone, sand and debris as it flows, sinks and settles.

The project was shown at the SFA Art Galleries, Cole Art Center (Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas) in 2024 and at Galería Monterroso in Houston in 2025. The Secret Life of Plants (2024) is in the SFASU collection.
