About the work
Clusters of small rings and dots in rust, red, orange and white spread across a smoky grey ground, densest on the left and along the lower edge. Fine strokes rise along the top like stems, and a darker hollow opens at the centre where the marks fall away.
Part of Crossing Water, the work shares its title with The Secret Life of Plants, the series of botanical tangles that began the same year.
About the series
“We set ourselves the challenge of working with the concept of water, which was very different from what I had been doing. It had no fixed structure, and this forced me to experiment with things I had previously kept more contained, particularly colour itself.”
