Luces y Sombras

2012 to 2019

Square painting of a dense field of small black and grey marks over a brushed pale grey ground, thinning towards the top and lighter near the centre.
Luces y Sombras, 2013 · Oil & ink on canvas · 150 × 150 cm
“Amid games of light and shadow, such as those in Luces y sombras, which open up fissures through which one can breathe deeply, colour itself also becomes a matter to move through.”
Domenico de Chirico, curator, catalogue essay, 2026

Luces y Sombras, Spanish for "lights and shadows", is the earliest series shown here. Worked in oil and ink, its crowds are built from black and grey, and the light comes through as openings in the dark mass.

The series gave its name to Ima Montoya’s solo exhibition at the Instituto Cervantes in Budapest and Bucharest in 2013.
