About the work

El Angel Caido means “the fallen angel”. Broad gestural strokes fill the lower half of the canvas. On the left, black and grey arcs curve up and over, worn and textured. To the right, pale grey bands fold back on themselves in a zigzag. Fine black spatters, and a few calligraphic marks in the upper right, sit on an open white ground.

Within Luces y Sombras, the crowd gives way here to a few large forms held between black and light.

About the series

“Amid games of light and shadow, such as those in Luces y sombras, which open up fissures through which one can breathe deeply, colour itself also becomes a matter to move through.”

Domenico de Chirico, curator, catalogue essay, 2026

Square painting in black, grey and white: broad curved black strokes rise on the left, pale grey ribbon-like bands zigzag across the lower right, and a dark strip runs along the bottom.
