About the work
Hundreds of small black and grey marks crowd the canvas, thick at the base and sides and loosening towards the top edge. Brushed grey veils run beneath them, and paler patches open through the mass, brightest near the centre.
The title, meaning “lights and shadows”, gives its name to the series. In oil and ink, the dark crowd is broken here and there by openings of light.
