Like a Rolling Stone

2018 to 2026

Square painting in deep crimson and rose, with crowds of tiny figures gathered in clusters, white flecks scattered like sparks and a few pale translucent circles.
Caos Rojo, 2025 · Oil on canvas · 150 × 150 cm
“Movement, interconnected bodies, human structures that somehow make the spectator part of it. I work with layers of colour, like skin, looking for depth and almost always with ascendant movement.”
Ima Montoya, artist statement, 2026

Begun in 2018, Like a Rolling Stone is one of Ima Montoya’s longest-running series. Seen from above, crowds gather, scatter and climb across fields of layered paint, joined by recurring presences: black bulls, translucent circles, lines of light.

The palette has moved from the earthy golds of Tierra and Plata to the bolder reds of Caos Rojo and Gorri, and the newest works carry the series onto paper in ink and gold leaf.
